How do Tax Software coupons work?
Tax software is the one category where the coupon codes you find elsewhere are mostly fiction. The big filing services rarely issue public discount codes, so the aggregator pages advertising them are usually running invented strings to earn an affiliate click. This page lists the offers we can actually trace to the provider's own site, with the real pricing shown on each card.
Where the real savings are
- IRS Free File. If your income is under the provider's threshold, you can file federal and state for nothing — but only by entering through the IRS Free File link, not the company's main site. This is worth more than any code.
- Free federal, paid state. Most services now give federal filing away and charge only for the state return. The state fee is the number to compare.
- Skip the pay-with-refund fee. Paying the filing fee from your refund typically costs an extra $20–$25. Paying by card is free.
- Free forms. Self-employment, investments and rental income are free on some services and a paid upgrade on others. That gap is often larger than a percentage off.
Do tax software coupon codes exist?
Some services do run them, and a few have a code box at checkout. But many discount codes that circulate for tax software died years ago and are simply never removed from coupon sites. Where a code is genuinely live, we list it with the date it was checked. Where one is dead, we say so rather than let you waste a checkout attempt on it.
When to file for the best price
Filing prices tend to rise as the April deadline gets closer, so the cheapest time to file is early in the season. If you file an extension, remember it extends the time to file, not the time to pay — any tax owed is still due on the original deadline.
